MIPTV 2022 has had a good first day and today moves forward on the second, both with a clear priority across the unscripted industry: to set up a new format, or better a new type of formats, that makes the difference in the post pandemic times. So far, the big classics are back, to join the family. But a new thing is needed. There are many trends and ideas, after watching Fresh TV and FRAPA conferences, even exhibitor main launches yesterday. But buyers usually complain about lack of creativity. Let’s see…
David Ciaramella, from UK’s K7, resumed its presentation at the FRAPA Formats Summit: ‘What’s new or up? Realities are back in all their forms, but especially traditional dating shows with different approaches, more survival pieces, realities where the contestant gets surprised and unscripted shows coming from scripted stories, like Amazon is doing. All genres can be used as hook: from thrillers to dramas’.
The Wit’s traditional Fresh TV Formats led by Virginia Mouseler announced the born of a new reality genre called “D-Acting”, which fuses dating shows with more developed contexts. The executive also listed the four best-selling formats of the season: “Masked Singer” (MBC, Middle East), “I Can See Your Voice” (CJ ENM, Korea), “Lego Masters” (Banijay) and “Got Talent” (Fremantle).
Gepke Genderlof, BE-TV (Belgium): ‘Our format of the moment is “The Way” out, with the ‘Escape room’ idea. Other is The musical of your life, in the line of exploring hot moments of most of the people: a first love, childhood plays, if your work is the correct one, to be fired, etc’. Gila Kantar, Global Agency (Turkey): ‘We have unique success with Beat me if you can, because it combines a singing show with game, memory and strategy. Both contestants and juries are playing’.
Fictions? Glance and Tape Consultancy’ “One TV Year in The World: Cracking TV Audiences” highlighted that a large part of European countries watched twice as much TV compared to previous years, while on the content side, crime dramas that take place within family axes were the “fiction king” last year. Another two trends on fiction are: series with fathers and how they cope with unprecedented responsibilities within the family structure; and stories about women in roles of authority.
This MIPTV vs. last Mipcom? Many exhibitors agree that this week there are quite the same people than October, but more distributed in the halls of the Palais and around, when at Mipcom most of the people were concentrated at the Riviera 7 Hall. And this time many people confirmed their attendance at the last minute, with meetings being arranged on Sunday and even Monday. The new format of all small booths and together is appreciated by buyers, because they walk less and can reach on time easier their meetings. Every day new OTTs are discovered.
